Complex trauma doesn't follow the protocol. You're not doing it wrong.
Is This You?
Stuck in Phase 2
You've installed resources for months, and every step toward processing brings flooding, shutdown, or a canceled session.
Parts take over
A protector shuts the session down or a young part shows up, and you're not sure how parts work fits with EMDR.
Processing goes sideways
Your client loops, dissociates, or gets overwhelmed, and you spend the evening replaying the session.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
What you'll be able to do
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Identify at least three relational strategies for building rapport and a working therapeutic alliance with clients presenting with complex PTSD.
2. Develop a treatment plan that can work well with CPTSD clients.
3. Apply EMDR Phase 2 resource development techniques adapted for clients with complex trauma.
4. Differentiate between ventral vagal state, sympathetic state, and dorsal vagal state when CPTSD clients are in the therapy session.
5. Explain the role of implicit and explicit memory in trauma and how IFS can be used to access traumatic material safely.
6. Demonstrate IFS interventions with EMDR Phases 4 through 8 to support desensitization, installation, closure, and reevaluation.

“Jane” I-Chen Liu, LMHC (WA). LPCC (CA). SEP™
Hi, I'm Jane.
I'm Jane I-Chen Liu, LMHC, LPCC, a Taiwanese American therapist and mom who has spent more than 17 years sitting with people carrying complex trauma. I started in community mental health in 2009, working with everyone from kids in play therapy to adults who survived childhood abuse, and since 2020 I've specialized in complex PTSD in my private practice.
I know the clients this workshop is about: the high achievers, deep feelers, and caretakers who look like they have it all together and quietly feel stuck. I also know the therapist's side of the room, wondering if you're moving too fast, too slow, or missing something important. Some of what I teach came from trainings. Much of it came from my clients, my consultants, and my own life between two cultures, family duty, and a very loud inner critic.
My work rests on safety first, respect for each client's pace, and seeing people as whole humans rather than diagnoses. I teach the same way. Come as you are, bring your messiest cases, and ask the question you think you should already know the answer to. That's how all of us get better at this work.

Frequently asked questions
-
Not at all. Basic EMDR training is recommended for the EMDR-specific parts of the workshop, but newer clinicians are welcome, and so are your questions. You'll leave with hands-on, practical ways to work with your clients.
-
Yes. Many experienced clinicians come because complex trauma keeps challenging them, and they want a place to think it through with someone who's been there.
-
You don't need full IFS training, but a basic understanding of the IFS model will help. The workshop introduces the parts work concepts you need to integrate with EMDR.
-
Yes. The CE Course will later be offered as an on-demand course. Attending live gives you real-time Q&A with the trainer.
Walk into your next CPTSD session with a clearer plan.
Spend a morning with fellow clinicians learning practical ways to pace trauma work, work with protective parts, and keep processing safe.
